Liam lights up Kitchener
Never before in the 50 year Ontario Hockey League history of the Windsor Spitfires had a player scored five goals in a playoff game. Never that is, until superstar forward Liam Greentree did so in Game 3 of this year’s second round Western Conference playoff series.
Greentree’s five goals and an assist on a tally by line mate Ilya Protas lifted the visiting Spitfires to a 6-3 victory over the Kitchener Rangers and a three games to none lead in the best of seven series. Game 4 is slated for Wednesday evening in Kitchener.
Greentree now has 14 goals, 10 assists, 24 points in eight playoff games for the Spitfires this spring. Windsor now has record of 7-1 thus far in this year’s playoffs, having ousted the Soo Greyhounds in five games in the first round.
The five goals in one game by Greentree broke the previous Windsor record of four in one contest set by Spitfires legend Ernie Godden (in photo at left) back in 1981.
It was during the 1980-1981 campaign that the 5 foot 8, 160 pound Godden set an OHL record for most goals in a single season — one that still stands — with 87.
